Electrophysiology Studies / Ablations
An electrophysiological study or EP study is a test used to evaluate your heart's electrical system and to check for abnormal heart rhythms.
Natural electrical impulses coordinate contractions of the different parts of the heart. This helps keep blood flowing the way it should. This movement of the heart creates the heartbeat.
During an EP study, Dr. Lookman Lawal inserts small, thin wire electrodes into a vein in the groin (or neck, in some cases). They or she will then thread the wire electrodes through the vein and into the heart. To do this, we use a special type of X-ray called fluoroscopy. Once in the heart, the electrodes measure the heart’s electrical signals.
At Southwestern Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute, as a cardiology clinic, we diagnose and treat patients with various types of arrhythmias. As a Cardiac Electrophysiology Clinic, we specialize in treating irregular heart beats, and are dedicated to helping our patients get the necessary care that they need for a healthy heart!
